- Special interest in adolescent dog behavior issues and experienced with reactive behavior while on leash.

After receiving a Masters in Business Administration from Grand Valley State University, my graduation gift was a yellow Labrador puppy, named Tucker. Since Tucker’s arrival, the canine household has expanded to include Koda - a black Lab, and Kirby - a chocolate Lab, completing our "Labrador Rainbow!" As the owner of three rambunctious labs, I experienced all the typical challenges: housetraining, creating good manners and behavior, learning to successfully understand and communicate with my dogs, and how to handle a dog that was reactive on leash.
My frustrations with unsuccessful training approaches caused me to seek a better way to have a successful relationship with my dogs. I sought information on how dogs learn and dog behaviors, which led me to effective, positive training methods and showed me that “training” is actually communication between humans and canines. I determined to have a successful, positive relationship with my dogs and a peaceful household; “training” had to become a way of life.
I began my education by reading various training resources, studying dog/dog and dog/human interactions, working with various trainers and animal behaviorists, and volunteering at the local humane society. During my studies, I discovered a passion in assisting other frustrated pet owners. This led me to obtaining a dog trainer certification and my CPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) designation though the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. The educational process is never completed, however, as new studies continuously provide more information about our relationship with our canine friends. Continuing my education to improve my relationship with my own dogs and to be able to share with other dog owners is my true passion.
My experiences have resulted in a special interest in working with adolescent dogs. This age group of dogs often frustrates owners – they have quickly outgrown their puppy cuteness and are jumping up, stealing items, and pulling on their leash. My goal is to work with dog owners to help them understand how to use positive reinforcement training methods to establish communication, eliminate unwanted behaviors, and develop a well mannered dog.
